Donor Instructions
Before delivering milk to a drop-off location, please make sure you have been approved by the Get PUMPed! board. You will know you have been approved when you receive a Donor ID#.
Here are instructions for pumping and storing milk for Get PUMPed!:
1. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water.
2. Pump milk into a sterile container using a clean, sterile pump. Any food grade plastic or glass container can be used to capture expressed milk. Boiling a container for 5 minutes prior to milk expression will help to ensure sterility. Try not to touch the inside of the container or the milk with your hands.
3. Pour milk into storage bags or bottles designed for breast milk according to bag manufacturer instructions. Please do not overfill bags (more than approximately 5 ounces), as they tend to leak upon thawing if over-filled.
4. Write your donor ID #, pump date, and number of ounces on each bag of milk. If you are donating previously pumped milk, you may write your donor ID#, pump date, and number of ounces on a larger bag, into which the smaller milk bags or bottles can be placed.
5. Refrigerate or freeze milk within 30 minutes of pumping. If there is room left in the bag or bottle (but remember not to overfill!), you may refrigerate it, and add freshly expressed milk until the bag is full. Milk may be stored in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours, but then must be frozen to maintain freshness.
6. When storing milk, place it in the coldest part of the freezer, typically the back. Storing milk on the door may subject it to temperature fluctuations each time the door is opened.
Drop-off Locations:
When you have some milk to donate, you may drop it off at one of five official drop-off locations. It is helpful to call the location before delivering milk to ensure they are open and have room in the freezer.
